AOL/Macintosh Secure Page Fix Instructions

return to AOL/MAC fix page

We apologize for any inconvenience you may have encountered, but AOL version 5.0 for the Macintosh may have trouble accessing secured pages (like our credit card entry page). Both fixes are listed below. We recommend trying Fix One first and if that doesn't fix the problem, try Fix Two.

AOL is aware of the problem and has provided us with a fix. However, if you would like to speak to AOL/Macintosh technical support directly, call 1-888-265-8007.

Fix One: Date & Time

  1. Quit AOL.

  2. Open the Date/Time Control Panel by choosing the upper left-hand Apple Menu on the Mac menu bar. Select "Control Panels" then choose "Date &Time" from the list.

  3. Make sure that the Time Zone is set to your proper city by clicking on the "Set Time Zone" button and check to see if a city in your time zone is highlighted. For example, if you live in San Francisco, your Time Zone would be Cupertino, USA.

  4. If you live in a region that has Daylight Savings Time, make sure that the "Set Daylight-Savings Time is in effect" checkbox is checked.

  5. The last step is to check both the date and the time itself for accuracy.

If there are any question about setting any of these options, click on the question mark button in the bottom left corner of the window to open Help.

Fix Two: Preference Files corruption

  1. Double click on your computers hard-drive (usually called "Macintosh HD." Then open your "System Folder" in your hard-drive and then finally the "Preferences" Folder located in the System Folder.

  2. Inside the Preferences folder, there will be a folder called "America Online" that folder will contain numerous files (our copy of AOL has 10 items in the folder - your count may be different). All files except the "data" folder need to be moved to the trash icon on your desktop.

  3. Once all the files are in the trash, open the "Data" folder. That folder will contain several files (our copy of AOL contains 5). You want to find every file that contains the word "database" and put those files in the trash. We had 2 database files: "Window Size Database" and "Art Database". You may have 2 or 3.

  4. Once you have trashed those files, restart your computer and then everything should work fine.
